Your mandate is to enable youth (grades 4 to 8) to develop creative, conceptual and social skills in environmental design and sustainable development. Through the development of workshops and interactive visits, the coordinator guides youth through the stages of the realization of a design project, from the conceptualisation to its construction. The goal of this project is to make them aware of the surrounding environment, to seek out and learn about the history of their school and community, and to work closely with community members to carry out a common project.

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non-partisan organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in Quebec by engaging students in motivating extra-curricular activities. Youth Fusion has been working in the James Bay Cree Communities since January 2010 and Nunavik Inuit Communities since January 2012. It will be our second year working in Gesgapegiag. In this region, we have 3 main areas of activity:

  • Organizing extra-curricular activities;
  • Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make school learning more relevant for children;
  • Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Conditions

  • Contractual position from September to December, and between January and June (possibility of a 4 month contract or a 10 month contract, renewable)
  • 30 hours/week.
  • This position takes place in the Mi’gmaq community of Gesgapegiag in Gaspésie.
  • Salary of $435/week.
  • Housing (possibility of sharing a house with other Youth Fusion coordinators or school staff), phone, Internet and transportation provided. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodations for partners or children at this time.
  • Can be recognised as an internship in some cases.
  • Must be able to relocate to Gesgapegiag for a period of 4 to 10 months.

RESPONSABILITIES  

The project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities:

Environmental Design Project:

  • The Project Coordinator works with grade 4 to 6 teachers to integrate design and introductive activities to sustainable development into the classroom. This program supports a number of curriculum objectives in the areas of Math, Science, Social Sciences and Literacy. Additional extra-curricular sessions will also be required to complete the Environmental Design Project. The participants will be led to develop a concrete project for their school and to carry out all the stages leading to its realization, from the idea to the maintenance of the final project. The final expectations for the young participants in the project are:
  1. Present, at the end of the year, a design project that improves the school’s or the community’s environment;
  2. Become aware of the importance of the natural and material environment that surrounds us;
  3. Become aware of the role that each and everyone can play in the community.;
  4. Organize a public consultation;
  5. Organize a local gathering to present the conclusions of the project to the community;
  6. Show a new open-mindedness at the end of the project.
  7. Delegation to Youth Fusion’s Environmental Design Gala in Montreal:
  8. A team of up to 10 students will have the opportunity to travel to Montreal to participate to Youth Fusion’s Gala in May where all the projects of all the participating communities will be showcased. The project coordinator will work with the school team and Youth Fusion’s directors to plan the trip to Montreal.

 

Student Council and School Engagement Activities:

  • You will plan and animate extra-curricular activities for students in Grades 3-6 and in secondary 1 and 2 on a daily basis with the aim of creating a more positive and engaging school atmosphere. You are encouraged to collaborate with teachers and school partners to create incentives for positive attendance and behaviour. Activities may include:
  1. Physical activity such as sports or outdoor activities (fitness, hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, etc.);
  2. Creative activities such as arts & crafts, photography, music, dance etc. (according to project coordinator’s skills);
  3. Girls’ group (self-esteem, healthy relationships, etc.);
  4. Science club;
  • You will oversee the election of class representatives, or recruit student volunteers; organize weekly student council meetings including activities to foster teamwork, communications skills, and leadership among the student council members; assist the council in organizing events for the student body such as a school recess games, snack program, sports tournaments, holiday activities, etc.; and help the Student Council to develop as role models for their fellow students – for instance through being involved in anti-bullying activities. You may need to assist the Student Council with fundraising activities as needed and will also be responsible for organizing a delegation to Youth Fusion’s Regional Elementary Leadership Camp.
  • Supervise and animate recess activities and/or manage a welcoming space where students can spend time between classes or after school. This responsibility can be shared with another Youth Fusion Project Coordinator.
  • In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:
  1. Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in student council activities;
  2. Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth center, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;
  3. Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

  • Attend Youth Fusion training week;
  • Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
  • Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
  • Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
  • Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;
  • Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities;
  • Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

Our mission at Youth Fusion is to engage at-risk youth in projects that motivate them to attend school. You will be working closely with school administration, local staff, and Youth Fusion’s Director of Educational Programming to ensure that this project meets its objectives. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Inuit or Cree culture and adapt our program to the realities of a Northern community. You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to propose additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

EDUCATION

  • Ongoing or completed university program in a relevant discipline (Architecture, Urban Design, Ecology, Sustainable Development, Science, Science Education, and related fields).

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have experience working with youth;
  • Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset.

SKILLS

  • Ability to organize an exhibition or a vernissage;
  • Ability to develop a design project (design, drawing, layout, realization, etc.)
  • Must have a strong desire to be a role model for the school’s students, and act as an agent of social change;
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
  • Must be able to work in English. Ability to work in French is a strong asset for this position;
  • Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential.
  • Ability to work in Sketchup, Autocad, Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) (asset)

  • We cannot offer housing for local hires. However, the phone and internet allowance will still be granted.
  • Local hires must be available to travel to Montreal for one week in the beginning of the semester to attend training. We will provide transportation to/from Montreal, lodging, and a food allowance for the week of the training for local hires.
