This position takes place in a Cree or Inuit community in Northern Quebec. It is a contractual position with possibility to renew. Transportation and a shared accommodation will be provided, as well as Internet. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodations for partners or children at this time.

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non partisan organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in Quebec by engaging students in motivating extra-curricular activities. Youth Fusion has been working in the James Bay Cree Communities since January 2010 and Nunavik Inuit Communities since January 2014. In this region, we have 3 main areas of activity:
1. Organizing extra-curricular activities.
2. Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make school learning more relevant for teenagers.
3. Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Terms:

Contract Period:

Contractual position, September 11th to December 22nd 2017, with a possibility to renew between January and June 2018

Number of hours of work:

30 hours per week

Salary:

$435/week + $150/week food allowance for Cree communities (Inuit rate for Whapmagoostui).
$480/week + $200/week food allowance for Inuit communities.

Responsibilities:

As the Fashion Design Project Coordinator, you will plan and animate daily in class and extra-curricular activities for high school students (Secondary 1-5). This project aims to develop school spirit, self-esteem, and well-being among the high school students, to foster creativity and to contribute to creating a more positive and engaging school atmosphere. The position entails working with the school administration, teachers and other partners such as the Youth Council. The project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities:

1. Fashion Design Project: Your role will be to introduce high school students to fashion design. The project will enable young students to explore the various facets of creating and producing an article of clothing: introduction to the fashion world, brainstorming ideas and selecting materials, sketching and confection. The project’s ultimate purpose is creating a clothing collection that will be showcased at the yearend Rising Fashion Gala, in front of fashion industry professionals in Spring 2018.

2. Extra-curricular Arts & Media activities: Take place in both an extra-curricular and a classroom setting. These activities aim to promote literacy and creative self-expression, while building links between the school and community. Depending on the project coordinator’s area of expertise, activities may include:
● Radio broadcasting club: Assist live and/or pre-recorded content for a weekly 1-hour radio show on the community radio (on-site training will be provided).
● Photography club: Develop and animate workshops for students to explore photography techniques and use photography as a form of self-expression.
● Arts: Facilitate workshops in fine arts or crafting techniques such as painting, collage, sculpture, printing, graffiti, digital art, mural-making, etc.
● Other media: You may also explore other forms of media and self-publishing such as “zine-making”, community mapping, stop-motion animation, blogging, etc. (for an example, please see: www.artistsofwaswanipi.blogspot.com).

3. Cultural Excursion and Rising Fashion Gala: Youth Fusion organizes a Fashion Gala in Spring. You will help organize a delegation of youth who were involved in the creation of a fashion collection throughout the year; accompany them to the event in Montreal and to all the activities planned for the cultural excursion.

In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:

• Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in Fashion Design or Arts & Media activities;
• Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth center, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;
• Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

7. Administrative tasks include:
● Attend Youth Fusion training week;
● Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
● Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
● Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
● Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators’ from the same domain;
● Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities.
● Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

Our mission at Youth Fusion is to engage at-risk youth in projects that motivate them to attend school. You will be working closely with school administration, local staff, and Youth Fusion’s Director of Educational Programming to ensure that this project meets its objectives. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Inuit or Cree culture and adapt our program to the realities of a Northern community. You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to propose additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

Knowledge and skills:

Must be a student or recent graduate in any field related to fashion design

Experience:

- Must have experience in sketching, patternmaking and sewing/clothesmaking experience;
- Must have experience working with youth;
- Must be able to relocate to Northern Quebec for a period of 4 to 10 months.
- Must have a strong desire to be a role model for the school’s students, and act as an agent of social change;
- Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
- Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
- Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset;
- Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential;

Languages:

Must be able to work in English. Ability to work in French is a strong asset for this position
