Youth Fusion offers a program to help integrate and engage First Nations and Inuit students at the CEGEP level. Students from remote northern communities who attend post-secondary studies in Montreal face many barriers to success, including home-sickness and isolation, as well as language and cultural barriers within the education system. The selected candidate will plan and animate a program to promote healthy living, develop leadership skills as well as community engagement amongst the Indigenous students at the CEGEP level.

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non partisan organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in Quebec by engaging students in motivating in class and extra-curricular activities. Youth Fusion has been working in the James Bay Cree Communities since January 2010 and Nunavik Inuit Communities since January 2012, at John Abbott College since September 2014, at Dawson College since September 2017 and at Vanier College since September 2019.


  • Contractual position from September to December, and between January and June (possibility of a 4-month contract or a 10 month contract, renewable).
  • 15 hours/week.
  • John Abbott College, located in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, and Dawson College, located in Montreal.
  • $14.5/hour.
  • Candidates MUST currently be enrolled at a Montreal University;
  • Can be recognised as an internship in some cases.

This project involves the following tasks:

  • Physical activity and fitness:

Organize and animate after-school sports, fitness, or outdoor activities at least twice per week. Physical activities may include basketball, floor-hockey, dance, fitness, hiking, snowshoeing, etc. It may also be possible to organize larger scale outdoor events such as camping, canoeing, skiing, dog-sledding, etc.

  • Student Lounge:

Support the Centre’s team in making the Student Lounge a welcoming space where students can spend time between classes or after school. Provide occasional structured activities in the Lounge and create a safe space and the opportunities for the participants to discuss issues and solutions that were important to them;

  • Healthy cooking:

The project coordinator will plan and facilitate a weekly healthy cooking activity in which students will learn to prepare inexpensive, healthy, home-made foods, and then have the opportunity to share an evening meal;

  • Well-being Activities:

The foundations of this project are based on a holistic view of health, addressing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the students’ well-being. Develop activities based on the coordinators’ interest to support the well-being of the students. These activities can include meditation workshops, time management workshops, arts and crafts (beading, sewing, drawings, collage, etc.), the invitation of guest speakers, etc.

  • Weekend community-building activities

Over the course of the year, we wish to plan 2 weekend day-trips a month for students to discover Montreal and the surrounding areas. The activities can be chosen and planned with the students in order to reflect their interests, and may include things like bowling, visiting a museum, attending a concert or festival, hiking, rock-climbing, paint-ball, etc. As some college students have children, we aim to include some child-friendly activities.

Youth Fusion’s project coordinator will work alongside two Indigenous student animators, and in partnership with the Aboriginal Student Services Centre (for John Abbott’s College), the First Peoples Centre (for Dawson College), A’no:wara Indigenous Student Centre and staff of the Kativik Ilisarniliriniq and Cree School Board Post-Secondary Student Services. The position will involve consulting and involving Indigenous college students in planning the activities. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Indigenous cultures and adapting our program to this clientele.  You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to propose additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

  • In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:
  1. Organize daily activities (facilitated by the coordinator or the animators) and collaborate with the Aboriginal Student Services Centre and the Kativik house (John Abbott College) or the First Peoples Centre (for Dawson College) or A’no:wara Indigenous Student Centre (for Vanier College);
  2. Consult students and involve them in planning weekend activities;
  3. Supervise 2 animators, who are CEGEP students;
  4. Manage logistics and facilitate weekend outings, including one overnight trip.


  • Attend Youth Fusion training week;
  • Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
  • Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
  • Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
  • Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;
  • Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities;
  • Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.


  • Must be a university student in a relevant discipline (education, social work, youth work, communications, human relations, community development, etc.);


  • Must have experience working with youth;
  • Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset.


  • Must have a strong desire to be a role model for the school’s students, and act as an agent of social change;
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
  • Must be able to work in English. Ability to work in French is a strong asset for this position;
  • Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential.
