Your role will be to introduce elementary school students to the world of opera. As project coordinator, you will conduct workshops where children will be able to explore singing, tempo, songwriting, acting and staging an opera. You will help your students develop their knowledge of opera, its history and major composers. Workshops led by opera professionals and field trips will also be planned to give students a tangible sense of what they’re learning. The students will be required to write and create a short opera to be staged at the end of the project.

Maximum of 12 hours per week

14,50$ per hour

Flexible and regular hours: The schedule is set at the beginning of each term, jointly with the school, and subject to the students’ academic commitments

Responsibilities:

- Having the students benefit from your expertise by putting forward projects that are integrative, stimulating and wide-ranging;
- Working closely with the school’s teachers and administrators, and Youth Fusion officials, in order to maximize the project’s impact and awareness within the school;
- Agreeing to adhere to the mission and values of Youth Fusion, i.e. fostering and positively influencing school perseverance and academic success;
- Projecting a professional attitude and maintaining a favourable working relationship with Youth Fusion officials and representatives from the school/education community;
- Driving the project’s execution and success by taking initiative, being well organized, creative, people skilled and a self-starter;
- Attending team and progress meetings, and training sessions;
- Supervising the students and looking after their safety;
- Drafting proper reports and administrative documents, and submitting them on schedule;
- When needed, representing Youth Fusion, the sponsoring university or the project itself before our partners.

Knowledge and skills:

Currently pursuing a university education in a field related to classical singing or music

Experience:

- Experience working and interacting with elementary school students
- Ability to organize and present a short opera

The following will be considered as assets
- Any experience working with children with learning or behavioural difficulties
- Volunteer work or any other tangible experience working with youth (day or vacation camps, tutoring, etc.)

Languages:

Spoken and written French
Spoken and written English (some English schools will be participating in the program)

Criminal background:

A criminal background check and vulnerable sector screening is required for this position. The process is subject to a confidentiality protocol between Youth Fusion and the SPVM.
