This position takes place in a Cree or Inuit community in Northern Quebec. It is a contractual position with possibility to renew. Transportation and a shared accommodation will be provided, as well as Internet. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodations for partners or children at this time.

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non partisan organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in Quebec by engaging students in motivating extra-curricular activities. Youth Fusion has been working in the James Bay Cree Communities since January 2010 and Nunavik Inuit Communities since January 2014. In this region, we have 3 main areas of activity:
1. Organizing extra-curricular activities.
2. Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make school learning more relevant for teenagers.
3. Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Contractual position, September 11th to December 22nd 2017, with a possibility to renew between January and June 2018

Number of hours of work:

30 hours/week.

Salary:

$435/week + $150/week food allowance for Cree communities (Inuit rate for Whapmagoostui).
$480/week + $200/week food allowance for Inuit communities.

Responsibilities:

As the Science & Robotics Project Coordinator, you will plan and animate daily in class and extra-curricular activities for grade 5-6 students and high school students (Secondary 1-3). This project aims to develop students’ interest and competencies in Science and Technology, and to contribute to creating a more positive and engaging school atmosphere. The position entails working with the school administration, teachers and other partners such as the Youth Council. The project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities:

1. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL) Robotics Project:
FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international robotics competition for students aged 9-14. The program involves three principal components:
1. Using LEGO MINDSTORM NXT technology to build and program a robot that can complete specific tasks or “missions”;
2. Completing a research project, in which students propose an innovative solution to a scientific problem;
3. Ensuring that participants integrate FLL’s Fundamental Values, including team-work, respect, cooperation, good sportsmanship etc.
Training about the FLL program and technology will be provided.

The project coordinator will collaborate with teachers from Grade 5 - Secondary 3 in order to integrate the robotics activities into the classroom. This program supports a number of curriculum objectives in the areas of Math, Science, Social Sciences and Literacy. Additional extra-curricular sessions will also be required to complete the FLL project.

2. Delegation to the Robotics Festival in Montreal:
A team of up to 4 students will have the opportunity to travel to Montreal and compete in the robotics festival in March 2018. The project coordinator must organize a local process to select the strongest team according to the three components of FLL, which will represent the school at the festival. The project coordinator will work with the school team and Youth Fusion’s directors to plan the trip to Montreal.

3. In-class science workshops: Deliver curriculum-based, classroom workshops that show students the real-world science applications. Youth Fusion has a bank of activities, and the project coordinator is welcome to develop more. For example, older students could learn and apply field-research techniques relevant to their ecology course, while younger students could build their own meteorological instruments in class.

4. Science Fair: The project coordinator will assist elementary and high school students in preparing for the school’s science fair, and may be asked to act as a judge during the event.

5. Extra-curricular activities: The project coordinator will lead an extracurricular science club once a week. The selected candidate is also encouraged to lead other extra-curricular clubs, according to their skills and interests (for instance: photography, music, sports, etc).

In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:

• Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in Science & Robotics activities;
• Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth center, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;
• Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

7. Administrative tasks include:
● Attend Youth Fusion training week;
● Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
● Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
● Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
● Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators’ from the same domain;
● Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities.
● Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

Our mission at Youth Fusion is to engage at-risk youth in projects that motivate them to attend school. You will be working closely with school administration, local staff, and Youth Fusion’s Director of Educational Programming to ensure that this project meets its objectives. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Inuit or Cree culture and adapt our program to the realities of a Northern community. You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to propose additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

Knowledge and skills:

● Must be a student or recent graduate in a relevant discipline (science, engineering, educational technology, science education, etc.);
● Must have experience working with youth and have a strong desire to act as an agent of social change;
● Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
● Must be able to relocate to Northern Quebec for a period of 4 to 10 months.
● Experience with Indigenous communities and knowledge of lndigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
● Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset;
● Must be fluent in English and French;
● Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential.
