The Science of the land Project Coordinator is responsible for planning and facilitating classroom and extracurricular activities on a daily basis for Grade 4 students to Secondary 5 students. This project aims to develop participant’s scientific knowledge and their abilities on the land while by being active. The project coordinator should familiarize himself or herself with the science curriculum of the Ministry of Education of Quebec to develop an innovative program that transfers the objectives of the curriculum in science through externally applied activities. The proposed activities allow young people to discover opportunities for post-secondary education and science-related jobs. This position requires good collaboration with the school administration, school team and other partners, including the student council.

Youth Fusion is a registered non-profit, non-partisan organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in Quebec by engaging students in motivating extra-curricular activities. Youth Fusion has been working in the James Bay Cree Communities since January 2010 and Nunavik Inuit Communities since January 2012. In this region, we have 3 main areas of activity:

  • Organizing extra-curricular activities;
  • Working with teachers to develop and animate classroom activities that help make school learning more relevant for teenagers;
  • Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and community.

Conditions

  • Contractual position, between January and June and from September to December with possibility to renew and/or sign a contract for the full school year.
  • 30 hours/week.
  • James Bay Cree or Inuit communities (Northern Quebec). Positions are available in multiple communities; We will place project coordinators so as to match their skills with the interests of local community.
  • $435/week + $150/week food allowance for Cree communities (Inuit rate for Whapmagoostui).
  • $480/week + $200/week food allowance for Inuit communities.
  • Housing (possibility of sharing a house with other Youth Fusion coordinators or school staff), phone, Internet and transportation provided. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodations for partners or children at this time.
  • Can be recognised as an internship in some cases.
  • Must be able to relocate to Northern Quebec for a period of 4 to 10 months.

RESPONSABILITIES      

The project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities.

  • The Science of the land project coordinator will have the opportunity to collaborate with teachers to develop curriculum-based, in-class science workshops that show students to the real-world applications of the science curriculum. For example, older students could learn and apply field-research techniques relevant to their ecology course, while younger students could visit the weather station, and then build their own meteorological instruments in class. The project coordinator will run science club activities either during lunch hour or after school.

  • Organize and animate after-school sports, fitness, or outdoor activities at least twice per week. Physical activities may include basketball, floor-hockey, dance, fitness, hiking, snowshoeing, etc. It may also be possible to organize larger scale outdoor events such as camping, canoeing, skiing, dog-sledding, trapping, etc. 
  • There will be a possibility to work with local partners in order to organize science field trips, which may involve canoeing, kayaking and camping, orienteering, and survival skills, as well as learning about the local ecosystem and sampling techniques. A strong emphasis should be placed on involving local elders in this process, with the intent of passing on traditional knowledge to the youth. 
  • Working in Partnership with the Nurrait/Jeunes Karibus project, the coordinator will help a group of secondary youth train for and attend a 5-day cross-country ski expedition during the March/April months. Training and preparation for this expedition would involve weekly ski activities (when weather appropriate), equipment management, administrative work/communication with the Nurrait supervision team, and helping to organize and attending 2 one-night camping trips on the land during the winter months.  In order to secure your role in the final expedition in March/April, the Science of the Land Coordinator must commit to a full school-year contract with Youth Fusion. Otherwise, you might play a lesser role and your space in the final expedition could not be guaranteed. 
  • In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:
  1. Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in science of the land activities;
  2. Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth center, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;
  3. Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

Specifics for position in Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik

In the spring of 2012, the Université Laval’s Centre for Northern Studies completed the construction of a Community Science Centre in Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik. Every year, the CEN welcomes hundreds of researchers and students specializing in biology, ecology, geology, environment and other related disciplines.

In Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik, the selected candidate will create links between the Centre for Northern Studies and the community’s youth so that students benefit fully from CEN’s facilities and the scientific expertise of its researchers.

The project coordinator will develop activities for youth based on current research that is taking place at the CEN, mainly in the fields of ecology, biology, geography and meteorology. The project coordinator will facilitate opportunities for students to visit the CEN and meet professional scientists and visiting university students. The selected candidate should adapt the scientific content to the students’ level of understanding.

  • Organizing and leading guided tours of the CEN (for Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik), organizing conferences with visiting scientists, coordinating meeting and knowledge transfer with community elders’, creating and supervising internships for students at the CEN (for Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik), involving students in creating display materials for the community or for the CEN (in Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik), etc.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

  • Attend Youth Fusion training week;
  • Fill-out and submit bi-weekly timesheets, reports and expense reports;
  • Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
  • Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
  • Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;
  • Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities;
  • Submitting a mid-term and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

Our mission at Youth Fusion is to engage at-risk youth in projects that motivate them to attend school. You will be working closely with school administration, local staff, and Youth Fusion’s Director of Educational Programming to ensure that this project meets its objectives. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Inuit or Cree culture and adapt our program to the realities of a Northern community. You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to propose additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

EDUCATION

  • Must be a university student or recent graduate in a relevant discipline (Science, Biology, Ecology, Science Education, etc.);

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have experience working with youth;
  • Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset.

SKILLS

  • Must have a strong desire to be a role model for the school’s students, and act as an agent of social change;
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
  • Must be able to work in English. Ability to work in French is a strong asset for this position;
  • Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential.

  • According to our agreement with the Cree School Board and Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, we cannot offer housing for local hires. However, the food, phone, and internet allowance will still be granted.
  • Local hires must be available to travel to Montreal for one week in the beginning of the semester to attend training. We will provide transportation to/from Montreal, lodging, and a food allowance for the week of the training.
