    The exhibition of the students from Chomedey-De Maisonneuve School is held here on the virtual gallery. Inspired by the theme “Be the Movement,” the students created individual and personal works of art after participating in a variety of workshops during the school year. Whether it is through different social, natural or emotional movements, the students have explored all possible avenues and created a body of incredible works that we are pleased to present to the public.      I link movement to change, and in this project, I represent the change that the Earth and the environment are undergoing because of us. 

    There are 8 million tons of plastic thrown into the sea each year. I want to communicate that we should reduce our ecological footprint to take care of our planet. I am concerned by this topic, because I care about my planet. 

    My creation is an experimental test. I used a plastic bag as a support for the embroidery to represent pollution and use it for recycling. The blue which degrades into darker colours represents polluted water. The blue and grey threads that run horizontally through the Earth are pollution that continues to spread. Brown represents the earth. The beige represents trees. The zigzagging red and black lines represent greenhouse gas (the main cause of global warming). The elements in my work represent the environment in general. Still looking to recycle, I used materials available at my home and threads from my school, which allowed me to use threads of different textures. The thread sticking out of the bag illustrates a net that trap animals. Two artists were a source of inspiration for me. I was inspired by Josh Blackwell. He also does embroidery on plastic bags. I was also inspired by Ana Teresa Barboza for the threads sticking out of the bag.

    Title of the work: Masqué(e) (Masked)

     I wanted to represent different social movements. I try to show that people hide their faces and their true nature, and should “unveil or unmask” themselves to be able to appreciate their true self while not being afraid of the others’ gazes. My goal is to pass a message saying that we need to show our true nature and express ourselves while respecting others. We must be able to show who we are and not be afraid of ridicule. The collage is a way of expressing that our emotions and our person are “glued” on us and can only be removed if we rip them off. This is why I say that one should show their true self. Dry pastel can be used to demonstrate that we can “erase” a face by modifying it, meaning that a face is easier to change than a personality, because the collage means that in order to change, you have to tear off a part of yourself which is why I used collage for this part. The gouache colours represent the LGBTQ+ groups even if I am not part of it.

    Title of the work: Les 4 saisons (The 4 Seasons)

    Through this creative project, I want to show the cycle of seasons.  

    I wanted to show all the colours that represent our beautiful seasons because I believe that we are not aware enough of all the colours of each season and that we should enjoy and explore. It means a lot to me because I love each of the seasons with their differences. I chose to use collage to represent the inside of my letters because it represented the meaning and beauty of the seasons that our environment offers us. For my choice of colours, it’s simple, I went with something that represented the seasons well. I chose to highlight the first letters of the seasons because, most often, we represent all this by trees and I wanted to be original and take an unexpected approach.

    MARIE-SOLEIL DESLAURIERS 

    Title of the work: La transmission de la connaissance (Transmission of Knowledge)

    For this project, I chose to represent the movement of learning passed from the adult to the child. This project is important to me because I think it is the most beautiful thing there is. If we think about it, the transmission of our knowledge is the reason why we are evolving today. I decided to include nature in my project, because knowledge can be any topic and I find that it gave a little more life and colour to it. 

    I chose to use the watercolour and a Sharpie pen, because I love the effect of the very light colour that comes out a little bit of the drawing to create a minimalist and comfortable atmosphere. I think this style goes well with my project idea. I also really like the mix of beige with several shades of light green. 

    I was inspired by Michelangelo’s work, The Creation of Adam, for the position of the two hands in my project (the child’s and the adult’s). I was inspired by it because I think the two hands pointing at each other projects the image of someone giving something to someone else, hence my project idea, the transmission of knowledge.

    This work aims to show how much people can hide behind a mask of neutral emotion. My goal is to help these people not to hide, while adding a relatively original artistic touch.  

     I want to show people that it is important to show what we feel in order to get the help we need. For instance, accumulated anger can have irreversible consequences. A sheet of paper that is folded can never go back to its original state, because there will always be creases, no matter what you do to it. I have chosen relatively basic mediums, but simplicity is the key of the message.

    Through this project, I chose to explore the movement of nature, which, in this project, is a storm. I wanted to represent the movement of a storm, because I was inspired by a game. On one hand, I illustrated butterflies and a camera that are present in this game. In addition, I really like butterflies and photography.   

    I chose to use watercolour for my final project to represent soft and fluid aesthetics. I used watercolour for my elements, butterflies and camera as well as for the storm. I chose to make a diptych, because I wanted the camera to be in front of the butterflies as if a photo was taken. On the other hand, I wanted to create a storm with butterflies as if the butterflies are caught in it. I was inspired by a game to represent these elements in my work.

    I chose to represent fashion movements over the past decades. This project allowed me to share my passion for fashions of other times. With this project, I wanted to show the differences between each trend represented and thus compare them. This is an important topic for me as I always had a fascination with fashion. I chose this medium because I wanted to represent a certain detail that I thought only drawing could provide. I selected the colours used depending on the era chosen, because, in my opinion, there are certain colours that represent an era well. I chose these elements to be represented because I felt they were the ones that highlighted the most my theme.

    After the apocalypse, few people managed to survive. The main character of my work is one of the survivors in the city, a lover of painting. Every day, he goes downtown to train. He really loves nature and birds. As soon as he sees surviving animals, he approaches them, ready to feed them. Despite the apocalypse, he is not worried, his loneliness reassures him. I chose to draw the character using a Sharpie pen, because I wanted him to stand out more from the background and have the attention focused on him.  

    I chose watercolour to create the background because I know how to use it and I wanted the background to be in colour. I was somewhat inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night to make the sky.

    My project is related to a social movement inspired by the future towards which our society is moving. In my work, I try to illustrate that we are moving towards a future with wars and tension as well as the effects that this can cause. This is important for me because it is my future and I believe that no one would want to live in such a world. I decided to use pastels, because I wanted to give a rougher texture to show how war can make things imperfect. To be honest, I have not chosen any colours yet, so I cannot explain my choices. I chose to create my work as a diptych because it was the simplest format. Moreover, I chose to integrate elements to show what we are witnessing in war.

    The mobile represents the movement itself, to which coloured painted shapes are added. I wanted to depict movement in a literal sense, so I decided to create a mobile in order to represent it at its most accurate expression. I wanted to show that movement can be presented in many ways. I used gouache because it is a medium that I like to use and I think it is beautiful. I also chose different colours for each of my pieces to amplify the feeling of movement. The shapes with similar colours are hung together on the mobile.

    Title of the work: Glimpse of Freedom

     Through this work, I want to present the artistic movement. This project was a way for me to represent freedom, whether it is freedom of speech or the freedom when a person is trapped inside or held back by toxic people who are bad influence. The hands represent the outside world that tries to keep you down and in the shadows. The chains represent your own emotions that are holding you back. The silhouette is on the side so we can only see one wing which means that you are trying to be free, but are not completely free. The silhouette looks like a dancer to represent the freedom gained after doing what you love. She is trying to reach the sky to gain her freedom alongside a bird silhouette which means that others have escaped from the negative vibes that were holding them back. The sun acts as a glimmer of hope and is small to explain chaos; the black spots represent the fact that you are gradually moving away from the unhappiness that haunts you and the white spots represent the fuzzy dreams that you are tying to chase, and the shape emphasizes the fact of chasing your dreams. You want something, but you don’t know what. I used very dark colours on a blue background (a sky) in acrylic paint to represent a strong person so the texture is rigid, a diptych. I chose to represent these elements, because in today’s society, especially teenagers, many want to be free from their parents, school, people who trap them or even be free from society with all these laws and rules. I was inspired by Van Gogh for the background, and Jean-Paul Riopelle for the spots. I drew my inspiration from only two artists because I wanted to create something coming from me, not something too flashy or simple.

    Title of the work: L’autre univers (The Other Universe)

    In this work, I wanted to represent the movements that exists in space. The work represents another galaxy besides ours. My palette consists of many different colours, such as blues and purples. I wanted to represent a galaxy that is not ours as if to prepare for a journey to new horizons. I chose watercolour as my medium, because I find it delicate. The colours of the planets are those of the four elements. One planet represents water and fire, and another represents air and earth. Of course, I chose these colours because they are my favourites. I chose these elements since I like them and I wanted this work to represent me through my aesthetic choices.

    I wanted to represent the LGBTQ flag in the background and then I put two fists that represent the Black Lives Matter, Asian Lives Matter, Muslim Lives Matter movements. I did this project to represent the fight for cultural, sexual and gender diversity. I think it’s important to live in a society that accepts you, regardless of who you love, your religion and the colour of your skin. Unfortunately, there is still racism and discrimination against LGBTQ people today. I chose to make a collage in order to cut out several skin colours from magazines. I chose the colours of the rainbow for the LGBTQ flag.

    Title of the work: L’amour sans frontière (Love Without Borders)

    Materials: Watercolour, colour pencils and felt pens on paper. 

    Dimensions: 23 cm × 23 cm for each segment. 

     

    With this project, I want to show the LGBTQ movements, but also the freedom movement. The freedom to let our heart choose without worrying about the unrealistic “standards.” This is why I wanted to show, with my work, that whether you are a girl, a boy or any other gender, there is no other gender that is supposed to complement you. The one you choose will be the right one and it’s not up to the society standards to choose for you. It is important for me since I live in a homophobic and racist family, and I often hear senseless and horrible words that set a lot of unrealistic standards for love. My mother, thankfully, always told me to never stop loving someone, no matter who that person is. I think my mother is totally right, because there should be no limits.  

    In my work, you can see watercolours blending in the background. It is not only a question of beauty, but it has meaning. It sort of represents the colour of people or auras of some people to say that all colours can be mixed. Some people will criticize this colour as some people will find it very beautiful. We can never please everyone. For the colour pencils, there is no real explanation. Changing material helps change the aesthetics of the work. Felt pens are used to put more contrasting colours. I didn’t want to represent love in black and white.

    My work is inspired by ballet. My work represents a part of my life when I was doing ballet. I chose painting because I find that, in painting, our movements can be expressed, just like in dance. The silhouette is painted in black since it is only a shadow. I was inspired by the star dancers who, in ballet, defend the name of classical dance.

    Through this project, I wanted to represent the movement of the supernatural. This project was a way for me to make you realize that spirits and ghosts exist. My intention is also to make you realize that almost everyone had paranormal experiences. This project was a way for me to represent my love for the supernatural. I chose to use collage so that the Ouija board has a 3D effect, and watercolour to create a blurred effect. I also chose to represent these elements, because I love the supernatural aspect. I decided to use watercolour because I always feel like the colours are blurry and faded with this medium.

    The link between my work and the theme is the movement of the stars and the movement of the eyes. My intention with this work is to show that even if you think that everything beautiful, many things can be lost, taken away, disappeared until they are no longer here. The eyes show the deterioration of hope and imagination in my work. I chose acrylic paint as a medium because I wanted a challenge to push myself. I chose a varied colour palette since planets of the solar system are different in colour. Colours can also show the variety of all things in life everywhere on Earth or in the universe. The reason why I chose these elements is because I love stars and the universe. I am also fascinated by the eye, but the presence of this element is more explained by the expression, “The eye of the beholder.”

    I wanted to represent the movement of water and pollution, because there are a lot of pollution everywhere and if it goes on like this there will only be buildings and highways. I chose dry pastels, because I find that it represented well my theme which is the movement of water. To create my work, I was inspired by The Great Wave created by Hokusai. I recreated the wave, but I changed the background to adapt it to my theme.

    Title of the work: Qui suis-je? (Who Am I?)

    To make a connection with the theme, I chose the movement of populations leading to a loss of cultural identity. This project is about my own loss of cultural identity due to my origins and since my looks don’t fit the standard of the “ideal” Caucasian woman represented in the North American society. The goal of this work is to show the pain and difficulty of feeling good and beautiful as a Black woman of mixed origins, and to denounce the loss of self due to imposed social pressure. For my project, I chose watercolour, a painting technique that can let spontaneity, ease and impulsiveness take over, since it represents more emotion than anything else. The colours are light, neutral and dull, as this is not a happy representation and allows the details made out of a Sharpie pen to stand out. The body elements (eyes, nose, etc.) are not done with a realism technique, but rather how I was feeling the day the painting was done.

    For my creation project, I chose to explore social movements, more precisely Black Lives Matter. This work was an opportunity for me to expose police brutality in our environment. I chose to use various coloured threads to represent cultural diversity as well as to draw inspiration from the reality of all those minority people who experience police injustice.

    Through this project I wanted to show the movement of the energy we release. I want to show how our energy flows and affect each other. Not everyone believes it, but we all have an energy that you can feel when paying attention to it. I used coloured pencils because we can see the direction of the lines drawn. I chose a wide colour palette to represent the different energy of each person. I drew shapes of circles to present the energy as waves. Spirituality was the main source of inspiration for my work.

    I decided to explore the theme of movement in relation to skin and gender.  

    I think that it is important to keep talking about it or showing it, because racism, the rape of women and genders that are discriminated are still happening. Talking about it might not be enough, so maybe showing it in another way might help. I decided to recapture the hands of The Creation of Adam, because I wanted a link to classical art. The naked body of the woman in the middle with the thin black lines represent veins in the skin to depict rape, skin colours are not usual to show that you don’t need a colour to fit into a box. I chose the watercolour as a medium, because I had never experimented with it before.

    Title of the work: Société des Transports Planétaires (STP) (Planetary Transport Services [PTS])

    This work reflects the exploration of our solar system. Recently, several space missions of great importance have taken place. I think that it was relevant to give a nod to the advances of science that has come to this point.  

    In addition, I chose this theme, because I was always interested in astronomy. I used watercolour because I think that it offers more accurate colours to those of the planets in our solar system. Since the project has a “subway map” style, I used the map of the STM subway as a model, to be as realistic as possible.  

    The colour of the subway line is iconic to the planet it represents.  

    The background adds a touch of abstraction to the work.

    In this project, I wanted to represent movement through natural disasters. In my opinion, we don’t talk enough about this theme which is, however, a very good example of movement that surrounds us. It is a way for me to show the beauty of nature despite the damages that it can cause. I chose watercolour as a medium since it gives great textures and knowing that a landscape is never smooth, I needed a lot of texture for my project.

    For this project, I chose space movement, more precisely the movement of planets. The main intention of the project is to show the possibilities of life elsewhere on planets similar to ours while demonstrating the size of the universe. The Milky Way helps to represent the size of the universe. The colours were chosen to show the possibilities of similarity and difference among the trillions of existing planets.

    Each creation takes time to complete.   

    This one extending over a period of six months, from December, starts with a choice of platform, a solid base that would hold it all together. With a spatial exploration to find our gallery divided by themes, we explore different dimensions according to themes such as technology, mental or physical health, history and fashion, design and art. With the collaboration of Youth Fusion, this requires the use of the Artsteps platform where our world is presented.  

     With such a project in hand, we first needed to divide our roles. Each of us took on the task of editor, scriptwriter, archivist, art director or set designer, each doing their part in building our little themed worlds. Together, we had to create our world as a virtual gallery exploding with our creativity, representing our theme while including each of our projects.   

     We are the movement.   

    The movement of the world we are in, the characteristics that make a human alive, the universe itself, everything that constitutes us is movement. Doesn’t a solar system represent us? We are stars, planets, moving through our world. We are separated, divided by our differences, but are all illuminated by the same sunlight, forever united by the force of gravity despite the direction we had taken in our path. Sometimes, we are inevitably pulled into this bottomless pit in the name of society, rules, confinement, but the strength that exists in each of us manages to bring us back on track.   

    Our personal projects, representative of what we are, what we want to be, what we believe in, represent us in our universe. They represent each of us in this world of creativity, carry within them all the difficulties, the hours of work, the pleasure, the frustration that we felt. They are grouped to form a planet, a dimension with other stars sharing similar characteristics, letting each discover a new world that we never expected.

    A personal project is an individual work created by students in the International Baccalaureate program. It starts at the end of their fourth year in high school and continues until the middle of their fifth year. Each student creates a product related to a global context, such as technology or identity, and it is exhibited at the end. The product can take several forms, and can be on just about any topic. The ones in this room are all related to mental health. The main connection to this year’s theme at Youth Fusion, “Be the Movement,” is that we are encouraging people to join the mental health awareness and acceptance movement.

    The central theme of our room is history. We have put our seven personal projects in this room to create links and lead back to this historical subject. Whether it is a journey, a war, the evolution of consciousness or social movements, we have exhibited our projects in this room to show our achievements. A room where history takes us travel around the world and through the ages.

    The theme is society and relationships as the works are inspired by the artists’ long-term school projects which all relate to this general idea. Moreover, at the bottom of some of the labels, you can consult the project related to the creation displayed. The subthemes, addressed relating to our main theme, are racism, LGBTQ+ community, human and animal relations, vegetarianism and fast fashion.  

    In order to link the works visually for the exhibition, all members decided to follow the same concept during the creation. For this reason, all the paintings that are displayed in this room are in black and white with one coloured element that makes the work pop.  

    After consulting each other on the theme and visual connections, the team members were individually focused on their tasks and work. Once this was done, they gathered to create the showroom together so that it would appeal to everyone.  

    The room presents five works in no specific order, so the visitor can choose their path. Simply click on the work to consult the short labels briefly describing it.

    As part of the IB program, the 11-grade students have all created a project on a topic of their choice, the Personal Project. In this gallery, we invite you to dive into the science world. Our exhibition is inspired by the game Scale of the Universe. We decided to include a similar concept with the interactive screen in the centre of the room where our projects are displayed.

    We thought this was an interesting idea, as it allowed us to explore the theme of movement, by putting our presentation in a video format. On this screen we played with the distances by moving forward to see the individual creations of everyone. This is done by following the main thread of our works and so, in order to see them, just click on the image and copy the link and then, paste it into YouTube.      Speaking of different platforms and techniques, our gallery offers various methods and materials used to create individual works. You will find drawings, paintings, animations and 3D creations.     The walls of this gallery are black to create an atmosphere that evokes space. We also wanted to create a contrast with the screen and a glow in the dark effect with the writing on the labels. The labels serve as stars, or rather as a source of light, to further evoke space.     

     Evidently, each project is related to the science topic and aims to teach you more about different subtopics. And on that note, here we go folks! :)

    Euphoria

    Since they wanted to bring out the darker sides of mental health, such as personality disorders, anxiety or depression, the room has a confusing, dark, even confounding look. The walls are black and oppressive to represent the state of consciousness of someone in psychological distress: the darkness seems to fill all our thoughts. Then, we see the works: bursts of colour and light in the darkness, of euphoria among depression. Each occupying a corner of the room, they each relate to a different positive facet of our psychologies, or to an aspect of mental health. We are therefore invited to dive into this aspect then, through the personal project of the artist in question, learn more about the subject.

    The movement is found in our gallery through the different types of art. We all had a basic theme, but our personal projects dealt with different aspects of art, which are fashion, 3D modelling, drawing, writing, photography and interior design. This is why our art pieces have as their respective themes the art form that our personal projects dealt with. Our room is some sort of maze, it is made for you to be confused. Enter if you like.

    Our theme of movement is present in the collection of our works, presenting the movement of science in societies today. The basic idea for the overall aesthetic of the gallery comes from one of our teammates’ personal project, done as part of the IB program.

    It is a model of a house in an ergonomic style. The model of this house has been modified to fit the possible conditions for creating a virtual gallery. Our gallery contains a total of five works created by our team members. They are mainly displayed at the front of each room of the house, one work per section of the house.

    The Technology Team consists of Adrian Hossain, William Mai, Léo Dionne and Shanmukh Iyer. Each of these artists has demonstrated a 21st-century technology skill.

    Arian decided to approach the theme by introducing Adobe Photoshop, a well-known photo manipulation software. William then chose to demonstrate comic satire inspired by Reddit, a very popular discussion forum. Léo shown 3D drone sketches and modelling, and Shanmukh demonstrated a computer simulation of physics. We created this gallery with the most technological inspirations in mind, whose walls are uniformly printed in cascades of number and binary codes, which reminds us a bit of the science fiction series The Matrix. Movement is shown through code lines that demonstrate the movement of our thoughts and those of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the robot named Timmy shows the physical movement of technology, the mechanical movement. Regular polygons and a certain darkness in our room remind us of the Cartesian minds of people in the technology sector and the stereotype shown by Hollywood that skilled people in technology are often immersed in absolute darkness. This room is very simple and easy on the eyes, each work is located on alternate sides of the octagon you are in and you can easily notice the explanatory label of each work right next to it.

    At the International School of Montreal, where we are studying, we had to do a personal project that aimed to create a product from A to Z. Since our two personal projects are closely linked to the theme of art (origami and perfume creation), we decided to create a gallery that would link our two projects.

    We explored the theme “Be the Movement,” because our respective works want to convey a message that aims to cause a movement in people’s minds. For instance, the perfume creation was made with local and organic products to incite the public to have a greater awareness of this issue. On the other hand, the origami work is inspired by Éric Joisel, a famous origami artist. We created this gallery using the Artstep platform, as we felt it was the easiest to use and allow a wide range of options for decorating and setting up our gallery. Lastly, since we were only two in this gallery, we decided to make it very small; so it is very easy to move around.

    Welcome to our team’s space on the topic of social issues. These issues affect the population, and they are many of them. In our team, our individual works A Life Like No Other, A New Identity for the Montreal Metro and A Never-Ending Detour exhibit some of them. Whatever the topic of the works, ranging from gender inequality to the inequality between rich and poor, it concerns the society and culture in which people live.

    We see the theme “Be the Movement” as a way of informing people or changing events for the better. The subtheme representing our projects and the overall theme of the exhibition is the theme of knowledge sharing.

    The idea behind the design of the room came from a brainstorming session, when, among many others, we had the idea of transforming the room into a classroom. However, after further reflection, we decided to make it what it is today, more suitable to our theme. Based on the image of a library, a place for intellectual growth, as we have tried to do so through our projects: to enrich the general knowledge of our public. The room is divided in several sections. Each of these sections is dedicated to a member of our team. Topics going from Greek mythology to health, the themes of our works and projects are greatly diversified.

    This room is called Mental Health. The main theme of the works presented is mental health. This is why the gallery is inspired by the human brain and the complex structures within it. The brain in the centre of the room is connected to each of the works like the neurons in the human brain.

    The theme of movement is explored in several ways through the various works in the room. Some works seek to represent the turbulent feelings of people affected by mental illnesses, while others address mental health as a movement in itself. Indeed, some works seek to join the movement to raise awareness about the mental health of youth, as well as adults.

    These three individual works are based on our personal projects. It is a piece of work that all students, who are studying in the International Baccalaureate must undertake in the 10th grade of the IEP as well as throughout the 11th grade of high school. Each student must choose a topic that interests them to do a thorough research and then present it in the form of a product they have created.

    Les défis de l'environnement

    This project is an opportunity for the students to demonstrate independence, connect their academic learning to personal experience and develop their own interests. This work will help them prepare for the College IB Diploma by getting them to work independently while ensuring they develop motivation. The project also helps students to get prepare for the presentation of a university report.  

    We are a team of three people who each address a topic that revolves around a similar theme: the environment. One student talks about geothermal systems, which is a renewable energy that uses heat from the ground to operate. Then, another talks about coral in the seas. Lastly, the third talks about the environmental disasters that are happening around the world.  

    Our theme has a connection with the environmental awareness movement, because when presenting our works, we help people to be aware of the pollution and global warming that are gradually destroying Earth. We thus encourage them to react by showing them solutions to help protect it.

    Inspired by the personal project of Jasmine, which consisted of creating tarot cards based on the anime Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, this card illustrates the projects of the Écolos Rigolos team, which were about fast fashion and fast furniture. The artwork itself is particularly based on the Portrait of Père Tanguy by Vincent Van Gogh, the subject of Joséphine Lessard’s personal project.

    The tarot card, inspired by Van Gogh’s work Bedroom in Arles, illustrates the personal project of the Environmental Explorers team about environmental issues and green architecture.

     Based on the projects of The Abyss of the Mind team, which dealt with the placebo effect, gambling addiction and debt, the card here encompasses all of these in great detail. Continuing with Joséphine’s project, this card is inspired by Van Gogh’s painting named Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear.

     This final card, this time showing another team’s gallery rather than their individual projects, illustrates through Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh their library floating into space, containing within it several books written by a team of universal scholars.
